MO* paper about social business

Fons van der Velden, Pol De Greve

Fons van der Velden and Pol De Greve have published a succinct (19 page) primer in Dutch. In this publication the issue is raised whether a social business development approach to change processes constitutes an alternative for ‘traditional’ forms of development cooperation. Attention is paid to the apparent impasse in today’s development theory and practice. A typology of businesses is provided and ten characteristics of a social business are elaborated upon. Furthermore, attention is paid to major challenges faced by social entrepreneurs in social business development. In the last section of the paper it is argued that the traditional triangle of state, market and civil society is no longer a relevant tool for analysis and policy making: boundaries are blurred. The paper is published by MO* Vzw Wereldmediahuis Brussels, Belgium.
